Interesting facts about national flowers of some countries

India – Lotus

Being an aquatic flower, the lotus holds a special place in Indian history. It tends to grow in lakes and ponds and holds a special yet sacred place in the mythology of ancient India. In the Hindu holy book of Bhagavad Gita, the lotus has been seen as a symbol of detachment. It is even said to stand for the beauty and knowledge as Goddess Saraswati is portrayed as seated on it.

Italy – Lily

The national flower of Italy is Lily also named as Lilium (scientific name) Asiatic lily, Oriental lily and stylized lily. It belongs to Liliaceae family Their bulbs (a modified bud consisting of a thickened globular underground stem serving as a reproductive structure) can be planted in spring for come into flower the same year, or in fall for bloom the coming year. They are also grown from seeds, scales, bulbils and bulblets.

Australia – golden wattle

Australia’s national floral emblem is the golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha Benth). When in flower, the golden wattle displays the national colours, green and gold. As one species of a large genus of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity. Wattle is ideally suited to withstand Australia’s droughts, winds and bushfires. Japan – Cherry Blossom

Japan’s National flower is the Cherry Blossom, which is also known as the Sakura in Japanese. It welcomes the arrival of Spring each year and is a symbol of renewal and hope. Interesting fact about Cherry Blossoms and Japenese culture is that during cherry blossom season you’ll often see people having picnics underneath the cherry blossom trees. This is called “hanami” or “flower viewing” and it’s a custom that dates back many centuries
